"I am tired of fighting. Our chiefs are killed. Looking Glass is dead. Toohulhulsote is dead. The old men are all dead. It is the young men who say yes or no. He who led the young men is dead. It is cold and we have no blankets. The little children are freezing to death. My people, some of them, have run away to the hills and have no blankets, no food. No one knows where they are - perhaps freezing to death. I want to have time to look for my children and see how many I can find. Maybe I shall find them among the dead. Hear me, my chiefs. From where the sun now stands, I will fight no more forever." Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce

The cinema verite story of Outlaw Poet and king of the underground Ron Whitehead. This feature length documentary film will be a journey through Ron’s life; from driving 60-miles an hour at 3 a.m. through the streets of Louisville, in reverse, with Hunter S. Thompson, to his relationships with Beat Generation juggernauts, complete with an introspective look at his childhood growing up on a farm in rural Ohio County western Kentucky where Bill Monroe birthed Bluegrass Music, Ron & Johnny Depp both birthed in Owensboro Kentucky.
Through images, interviews, and Ron’s own words, the story of Ron Whitehead will be documented as he travels to Iceland to share his latest book The Storm Generation Manifesto and on parting, the wilderness poems (produced by Gill Scott Holland’s Holland Brown Books www.hollandbrownbooks.com). He’ll read “The Viking Mountain” and “The Storm Generation Manifesto” atop The Viking Mountain plus readings from San Francisco crossing the USA to New York City to Ireland and Scotland and England and The Netherlands and Belgium and Italy and Germany and India and Nicaragua and Argentina and Beyond.
The film will include interviews from: Anita Thompson, Douglas Brinkley, Frank Messina, Birgitta Jonsdottir, and many more. Plus music from the Nappy Roots, and other major bands/musicians.
Whitehead scorches the earth with his own brand of poetry, prose, and ancient wisdom. The visionary icon has lived life on his own terms. Leaving his family farm at the vulnerable age of 17, Ron struck out to discover the world – his world, his way. Through his inventive gifted hard-earned use of poemed verse, prose, and fire-breathing talks/readings performances and his unique raw indigenous force of nature lightninged spirit, Ron Whitehead’s journey through life has become a road map for the rest of us. As Ron enters his sixth decade of the journey, he seeks to continually perpetually eternally relentlessly uplift and inspire all he comes in contact with to comfort and heal all who suffer to awaken all and everything to the awareness that ultimately essentially forgiveness is amazing grace that peace love and understanding and fearlessly being our dream whatever our dreams might be and that regardless of the odds of the circumstances that ultimately life is a terribly beautifully gifted adventure an opportunity to grow our souls. Via his spectrum of creative works which include the spectrum all genres of the arts in his world travels he encourages everyone to come out of whatever closet(s) they’re fearfully hiding in and to find and be their dreams.
Ron is a gentle soul. His enlarged heart is bigger than he is. He respects and honors everyone’s beautiful differences while recognizing that we all regardless of any cultural, social, sexual, economic, political, ethnic, religious, spiritual, and creative differences we all have more in common than different. He is always searching for and finding that common ground. He recognizes that open honest dialogue – sharing the poems, stories, songs, events of our lives we come clean we find our own voice at every level of being and expression we become our ever changing evolving growing transforming true selves. We no longer have anything to fearfully hide. No matter where we’ve come from or what we’ve done no matter how many times we’ve failed. By saying that failure has been and is his greatest success he adds that everything is our teacher every experience event person good bad ugly and that if we pay attention to our so called failures, which are our best teachers best opportunities to grow, then eventually we’ll quit missing the mark, which is what sin meant originally, before guilt and shame were added, so whatever powers that be could can control, if we pay close attention to our failures we will recognize that they are gifts and by developing our determined will power we can and will inevitably grow from them.
Don’t ever mistake Ron’s kindness for weakness. He is a fierce warrior who has no fear of anyone and regardless of any and all circumstances all odds and while simultaneously paradoxically understanding that love really is that truth really is a pathless land and we all have to find our way to what that means for each of us that being a fierce fearless front line spiritual creative lightninged spiritual creative warrior relentlessly taking it to the streets homes individuals round the world leading guiding himself and whoever else is bold fearless enough he perpetually embarks into the unknown and he won’t take any shit off anybody. He was raised by a 10th degree bad-ass 10th degree smart-ass, his Father, who taught him how to fight and to kill before the age of 10 none of which Ron wanted to have any part of understanding that there must be a better more peaceful loving way. And simultaneous to his Dad’s teachings, the use of which are still too often necessary, his Mother provided the teachings of forgiving of giving (without anticipation of reciprocation) of tolerance of peace love and understanding. Ron loves both his parents with all his being and is thankful in every way for both of them. His Father crossed over a year and a half ago.Within three months 15 of his friends crossed over. All of which pulled the emotional rug out from under him. But he’s been an outsider an underdog all his life and regardless of how many times he’s fallen refusing to bow down refusing to ever never give up he works (he prefers to call it lightninged passion) relentlessly 24/7 to heal himself and rise again. He’s back on his feet and back in the ring. The phoenix rises again. Higher than ever. Miracles abound. He’s back in Louisville in his Cherokee Road hermitage while traveling the world more than ever. Breathing fire breathing alchemically crucibled lightninged poems. One of the last great truth tellers. Having been blessed with an army of angelic mentors and mind blowing miracled experiences he has mentored thousands and continues to.

Subject: Ron Whitehead & Eye of The Fucking Storm playing avant-garde festival
Hello everyone,
I want to thank all of you for your interest in performing at the concert series that I’m organizing to bring together Louisville’s avant-garde music community. It’s my notion that this aspect of Louisville music too often goes unnoticed. My intention is to exhibit some of the wonderful talent in this area to the local community at large. In addition, I hope that through this coming together you all will make some new connections that will subsequently spark more activity like this in Louisville.
Presently, the following artists are confirmed to play or have expressed interest in playing:
The Cosmological Constant
Dan Dutton
Jon Silpayamanant
Keenan Lawler
The New Minty Crystals
OK Kino
Ron Whitehead and Eye of The Fucking Storm
Softcheque
Straight A’s
Thaniel Ion Lee
Zanclopera Trio
The tentative dates for the shows are June 23rd - 25th. I’m waiting to hear back from several more artists, therefore depending on the final number of bands I might add the 22nd and 21st as well. I’m figuring five bands will perform per night, each having a 45 minute/hour time slot (I know that some of you normally perform a shorter time length than that, which is completely fine).
I’m planning to have at least three different venues to host the shows, all in The Highlands and downtown areas. Derby City Espresso has already agreed to host one night, and it’s my goal to confirm the other venues in the next couple of weeks. I will keep you posted.
In the meantime, please let me know if the dates are good for you (especially if you are available on only one of the dates, etc.). Once you’ve confirmed, I will put you on the confirmed list of bands (also, please let me know if you prefer to be billed by a different name than the one that I have listed above). Finally, if you haven’t already, please send me your contact phone number and e-mail so that I can keep everyone updated as details develop.
Let me know if you have any questions or concerns, and thanks again to all of you!
Best,
-Douglas

Okay
Ron,
hot off the press! it's currently unlisted because i wanted
you to check it out first and i do have a couple things still that i
need to do. i need to confirm names spellings for jerome people so i
can put them in the credits. i want to put some kind of filter over
it to make it look more like film. and, last but not least i want to
figure out how to put an animated lasso in the title screen--i want
the lasso to come in and rope out the "along the trail
production" (which i'm going to change to "an along the
trail film") i think that's all. i'm going to send it to
a couple other people too before submitting to festivals.

we are THE STORM GENERATION
(a few testimonials regarding Ron and his work, left page, after books/cds page)
Lawrence Ferlinghetti (California): "Ron Whitehead, out there in Kentucky, out there where the tall
heroes used to grow, is sowing the dragon's teeth of new heroics."
Yevgeny Yevteshenko (Russia): "Ron Whitehead is a prophet. He is one of the world's greatest
poet prophets. What an inspiring honor to hear him read at Nicaragua's International Poetry Festival."
Carolyn Cassidy (England): "I had heard people talk about Ron Whitehead for years so when I heard
him read at The Ocean on the last night of the London International Poetry and Song Festival I
understood why. His poems, and his reading of them, are pure genius."
Frank Messina (New Jersey/New York): "Ron Whitehead is one of my closest allies. He is a man of
wisdom and tolerance. Ron and I debate over political issues, and sometimes he's even right. But,
in the end, we're still friends. There is only one man I want to fight along my side in the trenches
of life and his name is Ron Whitehead. He is one of the last warriors left in America."
Blanca Castellon (Nicaragua): "Ron Whitehead was the hero of our 2009 Granada Nicaragua
International Poetry Festival."
Cameron Crowe and Nancy Wilson (California): "Ron Whitehead is a genius."
David Amram (New York): "Ron Whitehead is already acknowledged by many of his Elders to be
a Major Literary Figure and the epitome of the work ethic! Ron and I have collaborated, recorded
and performed at major festivals and universities all over the USA and Europe. Ron Whitehead is
an extraordinary motivator who inspires young people to pursue the highest standards, to work
tirelessly and to celebrate the intellect by constant study of Classic Literature while remaining
Creative. At 73, I continue to learn from him."
Casey Cyr (Connecticut): Ron Whitehead transcends even the devestatingly hard lessons of our times
and speaks to the only true lessons, the eternal ones. He cuts through the chaos that comprises our
chattering thoughts. Ron Whitehead asks: Can art matter? Is it merely a gold exchange for the rich?
Art IS the Holy Grail. And at the deepest primal level, everybody knows it. Only a few, like Ron Whitehead,
can perceive it as clearly and communicate it while in his incarnate human being."
Annalisa Papaleo (Italy): "Ron Whitehead is an alchemist of language, a magician of poetry, a King of
Words...I am honored to translate his work into Italian."
Theo Dorgan (Ireland): "Ron Whitehead is a one man Atlantic bridge."
Paul K (Kentucky): "Ron Whitehead is America's greatest living poet."
Michael Dean Odin Pollock (Iceland): "Ron Whitehead is The World Ambassador of Poetry."
Rober Hunter (California): "Ron Whitehead's energy and important work never fails to amaze me."
Douglas Brinkley (Texas): "Ron Whitehead is one of the most exciting poets in America. Poet and
literary activist, he is one of the great poets of his generation."
Bob Holman (New York): "Spoken word at its purest and most fulfilling. Ron's combination of full
drawl, magnolia sweet, and Wendell Berry's Mad Farmer's blue hot rage, vitally fashions a new post
in the American ear."
Allen Ginsberg (New York/Heaven): "Ron Whitehead is energetic, Bodhisattvic poetic spirit. Happy
to see and read so much poetic energy."

From: Ron Whitehead <tmopinsight@yahoo.com>
Subject: decided to not diminish value of this important new work so shifting major gears one final time
hello my dear friends and thank you for your patience thruout this naturally conflicted creative evolutionary birthing of my newest book and cassette. heeding advice of close dear friends and still small voice of my own creative heart and soul i've decided to shift gears one final time regarding release and performance of new work.
i've decided to not create a spectacle, as much as i'd enjoy it, regarding the release of this important new book, my 21st, and cassette recording, my 31st: prayers for the modern traveler, the last great truthtellers, nada
by yes ron whitehead & eye of the fuking storm.
i'm sticking with the handmade handwritten handproduced 100 limited edition signed and numbered spiral notebook versions of my new book (which i'll be writing all week starting in morning) matched with the 100 lowfi boombox Atticus recorded cassettes. 100 limited editions (orders from round the globe flooding in. they'll be gone quickly). book/cassette. free. cept for shipping. $10 usa. $25 international. yes gifts are welcome. i've lived been my dream for 25 years. a gift. no complaints only thanks.
this work is revolutionary in many ways combining multitudinous revolutionary rightontime diverse spectrum of statements colloquial political sensual apocalyptic prophetic hopeful devastatingly terrible beautiful dark light. you'll understand better when you hear see the work. Atticus Coleman, my nephew, a musical prodigy, is handling all the music. we'll be performing live a handful of times. first time will be in midMarch at a private or public location. deciding now where when exactly to do that. eventually a second edition will come out (maybe while i'm alive maybe not. either ok). polished production. book and vinyl album.
at our Live performance in midMarch we'll have the 100 handmade book and cassette copies. some will be dispensed before the Live performance. i'll start tomorrow handwriting numbering and signing the 100 copies. Atticus and i will record the cassette so he can run copies within week. some folks have offered to pay various amounts for the copies. i appreciate and with gratitude accept those gifts. if you google my work you'll see that it sells round the world for hundreds and thousands of dollars so these 100 limited handmade handwritten copies will within a year be worth hundreds if not thousands. that's no bullshit. i don't bullshit.
even tho i was offered a 9mm (which i appreciate) to shoot the copies with i decided that the 9mm would do too much damage so i've been loaned a .22 pistol which i'll shoot one bullethole in each copy as extra bullet stamp signature which, like my friends Hunter S. Thompson and William S. Burroughs, will make the 100 copies more valuable for collectors.
so. that's it. i'll decide within 24 hours whether to have the Live performance of entire text, with Atticus' musical accompaniment thruout, at either someone's private abode or at a public venue. open to suggestions.
alright. that's it. any questions let me know. thank you. your friend. Ron Whitehead, 919 Cherokee Road, Louisville, Kentucky 40204. cell 502 475 7772. tmopinsight@yahoo.com. website www.tappingmyownphone.com. facebook and facebook fan clubs.

Subject: Ron Whitehead's words @ yesterday"s Westboro demonstration
thank you Tim Druck, demonstration organizer, for asking me to speak a few words on peace and love at anti-Westboro Baptist Kansas church everybody's goin to hell demonstration yesterday 3/06/11. here's couple excerpts from today's COURIER-JOURNAL (Kentucky's main newspaper) related to the demonstration. they are followed by the piece i presented:
The Courier-Journal, Louisville, Kentucky, Monday, March 7, 2011
5 from Westboro face hundreds of local foes
Protests held at St. Lawrence Catholic Church
By Ben Zion Hershberg (abbreviated)
Five demonstrators from the controversial Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kansas - known for picketing soldiers' funerals across the nation and saying their deaths are God's punishment for America's tolerance of homosexuality - faced about 400 counter-protesters in front of St. Lawrence Catholic Church in southwest Louisville on Sunday.
The Westboro messages/placards included "God Hates the Pope" and "The Jews Killed Jesus."
Referring to Wednesday's U.S. Supreme Court decision that upheld Westboro's right to protest using "hurtful speech" at military funerals, Jonathan Phelps, a lawyer for Westboro and an organizer of Sunday's picketing, said "Jesus Christ has put a megaphone to our lips called the Supreme Court case."
Tim Druck, a Navy veteran (who invited me to speak) with the counter-protesters, said he helped organize Sunday's demonstration against Westboro with messages to friends on Facebook.
He said he wanted to demonstrate the public's support for the nation's troops.
"Our message is peace and tolerance," Cruck said, adding he believes Westboro "has the absolute right to be here."
...(leaving out much now last paragraph from Courier-Journal then what I presented)
The Supreme Court ruled that incendiary rhetoric is protected by the First Amendment, overturning a $5 million verdict against the church in a Maryland verdict after members picketed a soldier's funeral with such slogans as "God hates the U.S.A."

"Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. And why beholdest thou the mote that is in they brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye." Matthew 7:1-5

"Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
Blessed are they who hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.
Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.
Blessed are they who are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are ye, when men revile you and persecute you and say all manner of evil against you, for my sake. Rejoice and be glad: for great is your place in heaven, for so persecuted were the prophets before you." Matthew 5:3-12
"...when the Pharisees had heard that he had put the Sadduccees to silence, they gathered together. Then one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, saying, Master, which is the great commandment in the law? Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This the first great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself." Matthew 22:34-39

Hi, I received an exceptional request this morning which was honoured w/utmost respect for the artist re: the video Rage versus Tomodachi .
A sentence expressed by the artist in the sound bite needed to be deleted, unspoken concern on their behalf.
I have since re-edited and posted anew. The previous original has been deleted.
I only share with you as an example of the political climate we are witnessing that is ever changing in the moment. As artists and guardians of freedom of expression, we have the capacity to transcend limitations imposed on us and keep moving together creatively in a manner that affects positive directions for the greater good.
On a lighter note, I am happy to say, the original video had the most hits in the fewest days. Now re-posted with a re-newed version, counter begins at 0 and any comments that were made were also lost..
This is a small measure, still, If you can, I invite you to watch again, and consider sharing the newer version with likeminded people as time affords you. I know that for Takaki and José and their colleagues and loved ones, this film had a heartfelt and hopeful impact.

"It was no accident that planted Lincoln on a Kentucky farm,
half way between the lakes and the Gulf. The association there had
substance in it. Lincoln belonged just where he was put. If the
Union was to be saved, it had to be a man of such an origin that
should save it. No wintry New England Brahmin could have done it, or
any torrid cotton planter, regarding the distant Yankee as a species
of obnoxious foreigner. It needed a man of the border, where civil
war meant the grapple of brother and brother and disunion a raw and
gaping wound. It needed one who knew slavery not from books only,
but as a living thing, knew the good that was mixed with its evil,
and knew the evil not merely as it affected the negroes, but in its
hardly less baneful influence upon the poor whites. It needed one
who knew how human all the parties to the quarrel were, how much
alike they were at bottom, who saw them all reflected in himself,
and felt their dissensions like the tearing apart of his own soul.
When the war came Georgia sent an army in gray and Massachusetts an
army in blue, but Kentucky raised armies for both sides. And this
man, sprung from Southern poor whites, born on a Kentucky farm and
transplanted to an Illinois village, this man, in whose heart
knowledge and charity had left no room for malice, was marked by
Providence as the one to "bind up the Nation's wounds.""

Got the package!!
Ron,
I received the package. A horn-of-plenty of creativity!! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU so much for sending this gift, a timeless gift we will cherish forever. Vanessa and I dug through its contents like kids around a Christmas tree. Everything from the grassroots note written on the water-colored paper, the beautiful Never Give Up scroll, with Howard's artwork. Great design, haven't seen anything like this since I was in Florence, Italy, where a group of artisans still use the ancient papyrus methods to print their books, poems, stuff Dante would use. Or might have been when I was wandering, in another life, by the Ponte Vecchio. This is just great! And the book, well shit Prayers for the Modern Day Traveler is pure genius, pure rugged Kentucky down home Americana genius. In an age when people are saturated and quietly annihilated by the garbage heap that gets passed off as technology, this book is BANG-BANG shoot em up refreshing. Because when the shit hits the fan, when the lights go out, when the music's over and God casts his hand and wipes us clean from the great big ball spinning spinning free, people won't have a blackberry, a laptop, a Global Positioning System, a twitter account, just smoke signals, maybe a candle, and through the nuclear war fallout dust, Prayers for the Modern Traveler will shine as a beacon of light. And it does!
Your Ancient Friend,
Frank Messina

LOVE ALWAYS, CAROLYN PREMIERS AT TRIBECCA
A few years ago two
Swedish film makers, Maria Ramström and Malin Korkeasalo, came
to The Beat Museum to film a Carolyn Cassady event. Turns out
they were making a documentary on Carolyn and the 70 minute film
will be premiering in New York later this month and then screened
again a week later in Toronto. The entire Cassady family is in
the movie and the trailer looks great.

Big Joy -
The Big Joy Project is a film about the power of art
to change lives. It uses the life of poet and filmmaker James
Broughton as a lens. Broughton wasn't a Beat but he certainly
influenced the Beats. He was a Kenneth Rexroth type character,
already established on the scene in SF by the time the Beats showed
up in the early 1950s. Take a look at the trailer -
Ferlinghetti, Armistead Maupin, Jack and Adelle Foley are all in
there. I attended a fund raiser recently where they screened
some of the footage and this movie is going to be great. Visit
their Kickstarter site and make a donation if you're inclined.

JACK KEROUAC SLEPT HERE PREMIERS IN SARASOTA, FLORIDA
David
Amram sent us an email a week ago alerting us to a new documentary
that will be having it's world premier this weekend.
"Jack
Kerouac Slept Here" is the untold story of the writer's life in
Orlando, as well as the next generation of writers who will sleep
where Jack once slept. Film makers Gus Mollasis and Mark Reese
capture the spirit of the house in Orlando, Florida where Kerouac
lived and which today functions as a writer's retreat.
Per
David Amram: "I am happy that my participation as the
composer for the score and as an interviewee enabled me to be a
small part of a fine work that I can show to my grandchildren some
day! They will be able to see Joyce Johnson, Carolyn Cassady
and Lawrence Ferlinghetti speak about a great artist and wonderful
man with whom they had a real relationship, and also hear from Bob
Kealing and poet Frank Messina who are new voices sharing their
feelings about the work of an artist they respect and
champion."

Litquake,
San Francisco’s Literary Festival kicked off its 2010 festival
by honoring the original paperback bohemian, Lawrence
Ferlinghetti
(and City
Lights Booksellers),
with its Barbary Coast Award for his contribution to Bay Area Arts
and letters on Saturday, October 2. Those lucky enough to get
tickets to the sold out night at the Herbst Theater enjoyed an
unforgettable and only-in-San Francisco style event that featured
poets, writers, illustrators, beat-era survivors like Michael
McClure, as well as musicians Patti Smith, Steve Earle and Tom
Waits.
While
Steve Earle gave a heartfelt thank you to Lawrence for allowing him
and others of his generation to be born into a world that never had
to exist without the poem Howl, both Patti and Tom performed. Smith
began by tipping her hat to Lou Reed’s Coney Island Baby,
before segueing into her own composition, Wing, while Waits
performed Ferlinghetti’s Coney Island of the Mind, sung while
he played the piano, accompanied by the Marcus
Shelby Quartet.
In the green room prior, Smith and Waits reminisced about when they
last saw each other, agreeing that indeed it might have been 1975.

visionary!"
Hunter
S. Thompson
(Colorado): "I have long admired Ron Whitehead. He is crazy as
nine loons, and his poetry is a dazzling mix of folk wisdom and pure
mathematics."
Yevgeny
Yevtushenko
(Russia): "Ron Whitehead is a prophet. He is one of the world's
greatest poet prophets. What an inspiring honor to hear him read
here at Granada Nicaragua's International Poetry Festival!"
Cameron
Crowe &
Nancy
Wilson
(California): "We love Ron and Sarah Whitehead's WESTERN
KENTUCKY masterpiece...and Sarah Elizabeth's stunning music...Ron
Whitehead is a genius...Ron and Sarah are quite the inspiring
couple..."
David
Amram (New
York): "Ron Whitehead is already acknowledged by many of his
Elders to be a Major Literary Figure and the epitome of the work
ethic! Ron and I have collaborated, recorded and performed at major
festivals and universities all over the USA and Europe. Ron
Whitehead is an extraordinary motivator who inspires young people to
pursue the highest standards, to work tirelessly and to celebrate
the intellect by constant study of Classic Literature while
remaining Creative. At 73, I continue to learn from him."
Blanca
Castellon (Nicaragua):
"Ron Whitehead was the hero of our 2009 Granada Nicaragua
International Poetry Festival."
Frank Messina (NYC/New Jersey): "Ron,I received the package.
Your Ancient Friend,
Frank Messina
ps: these gems go into the permanent Messina Archives."
Joe
Costa
(Kentucky): "My God. I do wonder and admire how Ron Whitehead
writes without injury? Such a constant frenzy. Such disregard.
Whitehead is the lumberjack of American poetry. He writes with a
chainsaw!"
Bruce Hodder (England): "all you people out there with an interest in poetry as it's being written NOW by people who are bringing style and passion and innovation to the craft would do yourselves a BIG favour if you googled the name of Ron Whitehead and had a look at what he's been doing these past few years."
Casey
Cyr
(Connecticut): "Ron Whitehead transends even the devestatingly
hard lessons of our times and speaks to the only true lessons, the
eternal ones. He cuts right through the chaos that comprises our
chattering thoughts. Ron Whitehead asks: Can art matter? Is it
merely a gold exchange for the rich? Art IS the Holy Grail. And at
the deepest primal level, everybody knows it. Only a few, like Ron
Whitehead, can perceive it as clearly and communicate it while in
his incarnate human being."
Frank
Messina (New
York): "Ron Whitehead is one of my closest allies. He is a man
of wisdom and tolerance. Ron and I debate over political issues, and
sometimes he's even right. But, in the end, we're still friends.
There is only one man I want to fight along my side in the trenches
of life and his name is Ron Whitehead. He is one of the last
warriors left in America."
Carolyn
Cassady
(England): "I had heard people talk about Ron Whitehead for
years so when I heard him read at The Ocean on the last night of the
London International Poetry and Song Festival I understood why. His
poems, and his reading of them, are pure genius."
Annalisa
Papaleo
(Italy): "Ron Whitehead is an alchemist of language, a magician
of poetry, a King of Words...I am honored to translate his work into
Italian."
John
Rocco
(New York): "In BEAVER DAM ROCKING CHAIR MARATHON: fragments of
a lost text, Ron Whitehead is 'the great rememberer' and 'the great
experiencer'...a scintillating portrait...a Bildungsroman...in which
each memory becomes charged with his history and the embrace of his
subject...capturing the memory of what Ginsberg calls 'Mortal'
America...and Whitehead's new CD TAPPING MY OWN PHONE is a mercurial
collection which features some of the 'fragments' that appear in the
novel."
John
Tytell (New
York): "With The Declaration of Independence This Time:
Selected Poems 1996-2000, Ron Whitehead has a brave powerful book
and the voice to carry it."
Zen
Master Dae Gak
(Korea): "Ron Whitehead is Angry tender hearted Poet lover Who,
Ripped open by life's Sharp, diamond caesarean Edge, Emerges, awake,
alive, Shaking blood and tissue. Howling at the, with a shriek,
Morning sun AAAAAGH!!!!!!!"
Theo
Dorgan
(Ireland): "Ron Whitehead is a one man Atlantic bridge."
Marty Messex (Kentucky): "You know I love my WFPK (91.9fm www.wfpk.org Radio Louisville), but the best radio station in the world is right here on Brother Ron's facebook page, by gawd! Always love your tuneage, Ron. And keep on throwing those thunderbolts."
Eimear
O'Connor
(Ireland): "Ron Whitehead's words travelled at high speed Along
the Liffey and out into the sea...mesmerised By the motion Of
emotion...Something magic Happened over the Winding Stair Above the
streets, Closer to the stars."

McWilliams
(Ireland): "Ron Whitehead's poetry is like a fast train
coming."
David
Amram
(New York): "At the dawn of the 21st Century our young people
have few role models of distinction and even fewer people close to
their own age to look up to. Ron Whitehead gives hope to our
artistic and intellectual future and gives our young people someone
to look up to and emulate. Having worked with Ron many times, round
the world, I can only share my amazement at his genius-level ability
to organize and create memorable events that make all involved feel
inspired to do their best. His own brilliance as a poet is matched
by his dynamism, integrity and ability to communicate with anybody
and everybody. I am honored to work with him anytime he ever needs
me."
Lee
Ranaldo
(New York): "Ron Whitehead's TAPPING MY OWN PHONE is
superb!"
Michael
Pollock
(Iceland): "Ron Whitehead is The World Ambassador of
Poetry."
Karel
Srp
(Czeck Republic): "The ARTFORUM '98 Exhibition of Ron
Whitehead's important work, both his and his work as Director of The
Literary Renaissance, was a big hit and a huge success. It is very
important for us to see, through poetry and art, the situation in
USA and round the world. Through Ron's work we see. Now all his work
is in our archives. The people of Prague can continue to see. We are
proud. It is important for us. Thank YOU!"
Lana
Witt
(California): "Ron Whitehead is amazing. I've seldom known
poetry to rise to the honesty, stubborness, and energy of what came
charging straight at me in his CD TAPPING MY OWN PHONE."
Frank
Messina
(New York): "Listening to TAPPING MY OWN PHONE is like tapping
into an oil well of inspiration; a poetic horn of plenty where the
flavor of American political angst and true Kentuckian local color
shoots its way straight to the soul. Ron Whitehead is at least
Chaucer's equal. The BEAVER DAM ROCKING CHAIR MARATHON is a
Masterpiece better than THE CANTERBURY TALES. Three cheers to Ron
Whitehead!"
Kevin
Ring
(England): "Ron Whitehead explodes in a tirade aimed at pulling
down all the garbage that society holds dear: rampant commercialism,
couldn't care lessism. If the President thinks he's got trouble with
Ms Lewinsky then he'd better watch out for Ron as he gives us the
REAL AMERICA."
Frederick
Smock
(Kentucky): "BEAVER DAM ROCKING CHAIR MARATHON achieves an
urgency and immediacy that is truly poetic."
Jordan
Green
(North Carolina): "Ron Whitehead is the incantatory, subversive
bard of Kentucky. He is a poet with higher vision and higher
frequency tuning. He has a performance style learned from his
Pentecostal preacher grandfather but which also takes the best from
the oral poetic style of the Beats. Ron is an energy force that
encourages articulation and voice, that makes young people proud to
be part of something. His voice cuts through the rough reality of
his western Kentucky coal mining roots and reaches for a higher
cosmic grace. Ron has produced over 400 readings and INSOMNIACATHONs
and has read all over Europe and the USA. At the age of 48, with a
family to support and complete commitment to his craft, Ron
Whitehead will get in a car or on a plane anytime and travel
anywhere he's asked to give a reading."
Miguel
Moors
(Belgium): "Ron Whitehead dissects American Society with a
butcher knife."
Lawrence
Ferlinghetti
(California): "Ron Whitehead, out there in Kentucky, out there
where the tall heroes used to grow, is sowing the dragon's teeth of
new heroics."
Bob
Holman
(New York): "And now it was like a cyclone hit that stage - Ron
Whitehead is screeding a poem with an 8-piece orchestra toodling out
sounds by Jeremy Podgursky, amazing, high energy, a battle for
soul!"
Anastasios
Kozaitis
(New York): "Ron Whitehead is the most engaged poetry activist
in the United States of America!"
Al
Aronowitz (New
York): "An autobiographical gem that marks compassion and
defiance as the touchstones of heroic myth in the coming-of-age of a
young man in the western Kentucky coal fields. Ron Whitehead is one
of the greatest poets of our time."
Paul
McDonald
(Indonesia): "Ron Whitehead has the gift of perceiving the
divine in the ordinary. His work is always at least exciting if not
magical. It is simultaneously hard-bitten, stark and urban while
containing a gentle, pastoral lyricism all of which is always
compelling. His work is a dharma gate that must be entered, a
magnificent Zen koan where the question and answer lie hidden in the
experience."
Rene
Hendrix
(The Netherlands): "William S. Burroughs and Ron Whitehead, in
a series of dreams, taught me how to save the world."
Casey
Cyr
(Connecticut): "Ron Whitehead has been working so hard all his
life, has climbed the equivalent of a hundred Mount Everests for
poetry, music, integration, inclusion, non-specialization, LOVE and
the advancement of humankind. No one else who I know has the
endurance and capacity and generosity of spirit (except for David
Amram who shares these qualities) to achieve what he is achieving.
Ron is clearly chosen for the work that he is doing, and it is a ray
of clarity and grace that shines from his being. HIS GIANT HEART IS
SINGING!"
Jan
Pankow
(The Netherlands): "Ron Whitehead's poems are a magnetic field
of poetry energy: encounters, viewpoints, and facts of life mingling
with emotions, dreams, and visions."
Robert
Lax
(Greece): "Ron Whitehead's "Moxley and Eirene" worked
its way into one of my just-before-waking dreams last night. The
whole story. And yes, naturally I'm ready to endorse all he says in
I Will NOT BOW DOWN, too!"
Douglas
Brinkley
(Texas): "Ron Whitehead is one of the most exciting poets in
America. Poet and literary activist, he is one of the great poets of
his generation."
Tenzin
Geyche Tethong, Secretary to His Holiness The Dalai Lama
(India): "Ron Whitehead, His Holiness The Dalai Lama thanks you
and offers his blessing and permission for you to create a poster of
his message to you which you have written in the form of a poem. I
would like to express my personal appreciation to you. Your poem for
of His Holiness's message is extremely powerful and moving. I am
confident that it will inspire many."
Robert
Hunter
(California): "Ron Whitehead's energy and important work never
fail to amaze me!"
Diane
di Prima
(California): "Ron Whitehead, Fellow traveller riding the winds
of change between worlds, in the thick of the creative process, Bon
voyage! I enjoyed EVE AND THE OPHIDIANS. "White Horses" is
really strong!"
Bob
Holman
(New York): "Spoken word at its purest and most fulfilling.
Ron's combination of full drawl, magnolia sweet and Wendell Berry's
Mad Farmer's blue hot rage, vitally fashions a new post in the
American ear."
Jim
Carroll (New
York): "Love, Angelic Orders, and Blessings on Ron Whitehead's
good work!"
David
Amram
(New York): "There were over 300 poets and musicians. Ron
Whitehead was the highlight of the New York City festival. When he
read I was knocked out! I marveled at the talent he possessed! He
captures the spirit of the South in his poetry!"
Eithne
Strong
(Ireland): "Ron Whitehead's dazzling energetic work, his poetry
and his prose never cease to impress and astonish!"
Allen
Ginsberg
(New York): "Ron Whitehead is energetic Bodhisattvic poetic
spirit! Happy to see and read so much poetry energy!"
Harper
Tobin
(Washington, D.C.): "Ron Whitehead's BEAVER DAM ROCKING CHAIR
MARATHON is no cheesy nostalgia trip. Anyone familiar with
Whitehead's work knows better. He gives achingly real portraits of
Beaver Dam's inhabitants, offering up the disturbing as well as the
beautiful, the ugly as well as the quaint. His style shifts from
page to page always capturing the reader, evoking the spirit of
defiance and hope that is the heart of this literary treasure...Why
isn't Ron Whitehead already a household name?! His TAPPING MY OWN
PHONE is a gem. Ron reads as if any breath could be his last. He
captures the world in all its beauty, corruption, and potential. I
cannot recommend his work highly enough!"
Joe
Slavin (Kentucky):
"Ron Whitehead is the most extraordinary teacher-scholar it has
been my great good fortune to know over a career spanning thirty
seven years. His success in encouraging students, to express
themselves and grow as students, is unrivalled."
Lawrence
Ferlinghetti
(California):
"Ce Ron Whitehead est un brave type! Il a ecrit un poem
autobiographique que est epatant...sur San Francisco et un certain
fer-ling-g hetti...Qui est? Ron
Whitehead is Bodhisattva in Kentucky!"
Seamus
Heaney
(Ireland): "Ron Whitehead, the only begettor of all this, is
here for good!"
Colin
Cooper
(England): "Ron Whitehead lives at 100 miles an hour judging
from his book of poetry...like Ferlinghetti...he's a rabble rouser
and wildly romantic and we need plenty of those...the book is
illustrated by full colour paintings by Ferlinghetti...Fit him
alongside Gary Snyder for wit and insight...certain to shake up the
old guard."
Bob
Edwards
(Washington D.C.): "I LOVE Ron Whitehead's "The Coal
Miner(I & II)" and "Moxley and Eirene!"
Denis
Mahoney
(Rhode Island): "These past months I have read Ron Whitehead's
BLOOD FILLED VESSELS RACING TO THE HEART: Beyond Chaos is The Ocean
of Consciousness several times. What a remarkable work it is! It's
subtle (and not too) back and forth gestures and movements and
openings and its Placement! I wish he would continue this work! This
is the direction that people need to See towards, be, at least,
opened to. Thank You Ron Whitehead for The Work!"
Danny
O'Bryan
(Kentucky): "The Great White Light, Whitehead that is, swept
over The College last night with a round of passionate posey mined
directly from his ever raucous life. Mentioning notables like Amiri
Baraka and The Dalai Lama - illustrious heroes many of the
role-model-starved students probably never heard of - the poet
quickly had them under his spell. The man, who always wears his life
on his sleeve for everyone to gawk at, flexed his tattoo covered
arms at the scribes "I might be skinny but look at those
muscles!" and spit out tales of Kentucky rocking chair
competitions and wild family antics that made "Do You Want To
Be A Millionaire" look life watching paint dry. Certainly all
present learned an important lesson: It doesn't hurt to celebrate
life in all its painful and joyful manifestations!...Ron Whitehead,
a virtual P.T. Barnum of Poetry, is on a one-man crusade to change
the consciousness of the world through poetry and music...Whitehead
and his non-porfit organization The Literary Renaissance launched a
series of multimedia INSOMNIACATHONs (Temporary Autonomous Zones):
48-hour marathons of poetry and music and art and film (all the
Arts), similar to Ken Kesey and The Merry Pranksters minus the bus,
attracting large audiences and worldwide attention...This led
Whitehead to take his traveling magic mystery theatre on the road to
New York City and New Orleans (where the TIMES-PICAYUNE named his
INSOMNIACATHON 1996 "Arts Event of The Year") and The
Netherlands and numerous other cities states and countries...Never
one to separate art from show biz or politics (or newcomers from
old-timers) Whitehead assembled an odd cast of characters for his
Hunter S. Thompson "This is Your Life" Tribute which the
NEW YORK TIMES called "a beautiful literary last waltz."
The event included actor Johnny Depp, musician Warren Zevon,
socialite Roxanne Pulitzer, historian Douglas Brinkley, world
musician composer David Amram, the Sheriff of Pitkin County (Aspen),
former Louisville Mayor Harvey Sloane, Hunter's Mother Virginia, his
son Juan, and a host of others including a bluegrass band. Everyone
at the SRO event closed out the night standing singing "My Old
Kentucky Home."
Casey
Cyr
(Connecticut): "I got to know Ron Whitehead's I WILL NOT BOW
DOWN: Selected Poems 1990-1995 well and from it I feel an
understanding for some of what Ron has been doing in the world. The
physicality of which is astonishing - but that doesn't even compare
with what kind of alchemy is happening on the mental levels. Ron
Whitehead is Shaman and Shamas (the candle that lights other
candles) contributing to, directing, promoting, integrating,
expanding, and possibly healing the consciousness of an artistic
body of thought that sure does need help to go to the next level,
which I believe has something to do with the heart region. And if I
might prophesize, I think that Ron will be seen as one of the great
poets of our generation, which I believe spans about 50 years. The
kids of tomorrow's wasteland are really going to need him. Just like
we need Patchen and Kerouac. Those guys changed and saved my
life."
John
Tytell
(New York): "Ron Whitehead reminds me of Corso...early Yeats in
the Celtic Twilight...Ferlinghetti...Ginsberg...spontaneous
transcription emerging in a tumultuous rush...infused with
Whitehead's belief in the magical transformations implicit in
poetry, with the music of the poem serving as chant, incantation,
ultimately pagan prayer...the same can be said for the poetry rants
(Insomniacathons) Whitehead has been organizing around the country,
non-stop marathon readings."
David
Amram
(New York): "The first time I heard Ron Whitehead read I felt
what I imagine those who heard Abraham Lincoln deliver The
Gettysburg Address felt."
Thomas
Nord
(Kentucky): "Ron Whitehead eats, sleeps, and breathes
poetry."
Michael
Dean Odin Pollock (Iceland):
"The London International Poetry & Song Festival's response
to Ron Whitehead's I WILL NOT BOW DOWN was Incredible POWERFULL it
felt like a bomb hit The Ocean...people were yellin, clappin, sayin
YEAH others riveted wide eyed to their seats...i stood at the back
of the room up on some stairs to get an eagle eye view of this poem
which I consider along with LEAVES OF GRASS by Walt Whitman and HOWL
by Allen Ginsberg and THANKSGIVING PRAYER by William S. Burroughs to
be one of the GREAT American poems of All Times. I WILL NOT BOW DOWN
and ALL ALONG THE WATCHTOWER capture the voice/heart/spirit of later
20th Century and on better than anything I've heard!"
Nick
Obis
(Ohio): "Ron Whitehead, I thank you and Quincey
Troupe
for headlining the University of Dayton's 2nd Annual Literature
Conference, 2002. Friday evening was nothing short of astounding -
certainly like nothing my students had ever heard! I heard so many
wonderful comments from them in the following days and weeks about
all the various aspects of your performance, with your group The
Viking Hillbilly Apocalypse Revue. I too can still hear the
Icelandic rapping, the ambient music, and the powerful words; it was
a staggering, moving experience; I don't think I have ever seen
anyone, anywhere, break dance at a poetry reading! But what moved me
more than the poetry and music was your patience, kindness, and
understanding. I was so nervous before the festival, and so relieved
by your sympathy and easygoingness. You are truly a remarkable
person with a remarkable group. Thanks for teaching me to "never
give up!"
Denis
Mahoney
(Rhode Island): "Ron Whitehead has the goods and is the last
and forward maker of the fire breather preacher with the text
written new across the starry night. I can picture him reading poems
with snakes crawling out of his mouth and nostrils, like those
maniacs who work the snakes for Jesus, turning to medusa flames, the
fork filled flavor flick fuck tongue is two words split into a
thousand pieces of black and white sand and delivered like a Sioux
death chant, a new ghost dance to live and rise out of the ashes.
Ron's word is poet breath, new creation out of decay, intentions are
color worlds, filled with color, every tint is blow breath glass and
I keep coming back to his nostrils flared like John Brown in Kansas,
hard muscle break tracks, or soft glow of love he is able to bring
the rage round to snake crazy snake soul sonnets to orpheus, our
brother Rilke Flower-muscle that slowly opens back the anemone to
another meadow-dawn, until her womb can feel the polyphonic light of
the sonorous heavens pouring down is prophecy and vision blast bleak
and we all stand naked against the capitalist relation that has come
to encompass existance and Ron as new prophet stands against that as
strong as John Brown, Rilke, just a neck down the vision ladder from
our kooky Dada Queen Baroness Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven and is
exactly what is needed. I give Ron the world in his breath."
Tom
House
(Nashville): "That's a wild and fierce look on the cover of Ron
Whitehead's new I Will Not Bow Down CD, and that's a wild and fierce
picture of him there on the inside, and that's a wild and fierce
performance/production he presents. I was not prepared. Finally got
back home and settled in here last night put it on and blew my head
right from the start. Old favorite, "Tapping My Own Phone,"
the music is like the subconscious of the mind mouthing those
feverish thoughts. "4th Person Singular" a favorite as
well. Not sure if I've heard that one before. "Raven Hair And
Turquoise" and "Comes Night And Wind" both great. The
music never gets in the way of the words and, as in the very best
one to me "Gimme Back My Wig," the whole becomes way more
than the components, damn almost like rock and roll - and in many
ways this feels as much like a "band" CD as it does a
"spoken word" one. And I think Ron paces it like one.
That's just something always important to me, almost like a set, and
Ron is a master at that. He couldn't end it more personally,
poetically, beautifully than with "You Grow Wild In My Heart."
I Will Not Bow Down is definitely a masterful work and I
congratulate Ron and all who perform on it. I'll be giving this guy
some hardcore listening these days to come. "
Dan
Roberts
(KZYX Radio, California): "TAPPING MY OWN PHONE is the most
amazing CD of poetry I've heard!"
August
Highland
(California ): "Ron Whitehead is The Dalai Lama of the literary
world."
Frank
Messina
(New York ): "I've seen thousands blinded by the white light,
halos and fractal geometry of Ron Whitehead. I've seen
tundra-demons, geothermal genies, naysayers forever turned to stone
by that Kentucky 'Bone Man'. And yes, I've seen Ron Whitehead
levitate over stages 3, 4 and 5,000 miles from Kentucky, held up
high by coal mine spirits, red wine and Buddha at the palms of his
feet."
Jean
Ritchie
(New York): "Kentucky, by Sarah Elizabethth and Ron Whitehead,
is a stunning CD. Sarah and Ron both did a beautiful job."
Dr.
Joe Slavin
(Kentucky): "Kentucky, by Sarah Elizabeth & Ron Whitehead,
is a stunning piece of work, beautiful in both sound and
heart."
Tommy
Gaffney
(Oregon): "Spending time with Ron Whitehead a few
years back changed my life. The whole damn experience, from
the wine-soaked meeting in his living room to the
bourbon-infused book signing, he so graciously hosted, is still
with me everyday. Not sure how to repay him for all
that. And I appreciate the email updates on his mad
adventures. I open the ol’ yahoo account every morning
hoping for more news. What can I say, he's an inspiring
man. And I’ve been spreading the word about his
work around Portland, Oregon. In fact, I currently volunteer
to host a small writers group (in my cramped little living room),
and we discussed Ron's Tapping
My Own Phone
as our first “assignment.” We also listened to my
copies of “I Will Not Bow Down” and “The Viking
Hillbilly Apocalypse Revue." The overall theme for the
session was “this is how this shit is done.” In a
word, Ron Whitehead's influence continues to cross
mountain ranges that ain’t used to being shown up.
Thanks Ron for being you, my friend."
Casey
Cyr (Connecticut): "Ron Whitehead's new CLOSING TIME CD is
magical, radical inspiration, stark truth, gentle beauty. It
portrays the human experience completely. The flame reflected in
four generations, all together reveal the purity of oneness."
David
Amram (New York): "Ron Whitehead's 'The Sound of Snowflakes on
Christmas Eve' and 'Old Blue Got Run Over by A Coal Truck on
Christmas' are right up there with Charles Dickens' A CHRISTMAS
CAROL and Dylan Thomas' A CHILD'S CHRISTMAS in WALES. Not one word
could/should be changed. They are classics! I have always loved Ron
Whitehead's spirit and generosity as well as his work...These
stories are like the late paintings of Matisse, and Richard Strauss'
last art songs, where they both turned to simplicity and clarity
when in their prime. Ron's stories/poems should be read at The White
House, if we get a President who knows where the South is located
and understands the poetry of the lives of everyday people and the
beauty of family life as well as the magic of Snow in the
South...Ron's work is right up there with Mark Twain...It transcends
politics. His work should be read in classrooms, as children's
stories, Southern Studies, poetry classes, church reading
groups...His work can reach the whole world...His work is way Beyond
Beat!! Ron Whitehead's work is lyrical, touching, and perfectly
written AND SO REFRESHING...I'll be glad to write a Forward or
Introduction to any of his books anytime... Nobody is doing what Ron
Whitehead is doing, especially in his newest works...They are 100%
Whitehead."
Dennis Kirtley (Morocco): "I am all
about music. I think music. I sleep it. I eat it. It's just in me.
And not just my own music - also the music of great composers. I
know many symphonies by heart, great jazz compositions, note for
note. As I was reading Ron Whitehead's poems last night, music was
playing in my head and it wouldn't stop. It was the score of
"Rhapsody in Blue" by Gershwin. The brainscreen image was
that of a train, streaming forceful and unstoppable through the
countryside. This is the sense Ron Whitehead's poetry and person
brings to me. I thank him for being him!"
Gui Stuart
(Kentucky): "Ron Whitehead is the greatest living writer...and
he is still struggling to pay the bills so how can I hope for
anything more than to write...writing is an unnatural act...but it
is not any more unnatural than working in an office or talking on a
cellphone...and in some strange ways it is the most natural act of
all...being human feels like an unnatural act in these trying times
of fascism...the absurdity of fascism is everywhere but I don't want
to live like that and I sure as hell don't want to write like
that...I owe Ron Whitehead more than I can ever repay...he has
taught me that failure is nothing and that it is okay to fail as
long as I write what I feel and know...and I'm gonna continue, just
like Ron does, regardless of whether I ever get published...I'm
gonna continue to test my own limits and probe my own humanity...I
would love to make some money to live on and be able to start a
printing press with Ron someday but that is not why I write...I
write to try and redeem my own soul for myself...that is why I
write...I write out of some alien innate gnostic urge to express the
conflict of humanity that is in me and in all of us...that is why I
write...they can't beat us...Ron Whitehead proves that every
day...they can't take our souls from us...Ron Whitehead reminds us
of that in his writing and in his life...they can lie and cheat and
steal and even kill us but they'll never take our souls...Ron
Whitehead reminds us of that in all he says and does...Ron Whitehead
reminds us that no matter what happens Never Give Up."
Lee Troutman (California/Kentucky), on Ron Whitehead and EYE of THE FUKING STORM's new recording (companion to book) PRAYERS for THE MODERN TRAVELER, the last great truthtellers, nada
"thank you for the beautiful tape! phenomenal vocal performance! amazing! what a great concept for packaging with the hand painted art, the ambient and bended musical mind field... all of it... listening to it, it reminds me of a couple things Ken Kesey said. he always talked about the whole structure of lies, the square peg hypnosis of the governed world. he'd say 'sometimes there's a crack in the wall. as a writer you can sometimes find one.' thanks for being so damn honest all the time. thanks for being my friend. in all your wonderful insanity. i've been entertained by it all. glad to see you looking so healthy and spry the other night."
Paul K (Detroit/NYC/Kentucky): "Ron Whitehead is America's greatest living poet."
Frank Messina (New York City/Jersey City, New Jersey/Florida):
Ron,
I received the package.

David Amram Poetry JAM - CD Artwork Attached and accounting
Dear Poets,
I have worked through the art with David (who has already approved) for our CD (attached in panels). If you have strong objections to any of the photos of yourself, please let me know. I will get this to the printer soon after I hear from you. If you have different publishing info for your tracks please let me know.
The CD package was designed to show the reader/listener what it was like in the studio, as well as live performances, adding historical information about David's work with music and poetry, highlighting his musical catalog, books and work he did with Jack Kerouac, us and other poets. It is designed to be an 8-panel Digipak fold-out. HIRES PDF attached as well, if you can't read/see these images.
*Your copyright and publishing INFO is on this panel. If NOT correct, please let me know.
Names are abbreviated for obvious reasons!
Here is the schedule of costs and payment information:
PAST COSTS OF PROJECT:
3 sessions in studio x $900 each = $2,700
2” tape x $280 each = $1,120
Protools transfer, mixing and mastering = $1000
Hozomeen JAM EP we used for promo with permission to make but not sell = $1000
*I don’t know if you remember, but our EP promo CD was released at CMJ of 2001, which fell on (THE) September 11th, and was cancelled. After that, everything went haywire and we had an EP I couldn’t sell and our full 39 tracks weren’t out yet.
Total expenses before final CD: $5,820.00
CURRENT, NEW COSTS OF PROJECT:
Discmakers 1000 digipak 8 panel fold plus shipping = $1,770.00
Total: (past expense, $5,820 + CD printing $1,770) = $7,590.00
There’s still a lot of work to do, I will rebuild Calque Cinema website, register with online merchants, send out press releases, etc. I also will put up a store on calquecinema.com to sell them.
POSSIBLE FUTURE COSTS OF PROJECT
Accounting, legal, reprinting, other. Any future necessary costs (if any) would be deducted from gross sales in any case.
PAYMENT (CDS)
Split: 40% David Amram,
40% Calque Cinema,
20% Poets divided by number of poets
Split would be NET, after all costs paid based on retail MINUS vendor cut (WHICH VARIES), and minus cost of goods or other expenses in the future if reprinted.
The only way to recoup expenses is to have all us lead people to the websites where the CDs are sold until the expenses are paid. After that, the split goes into effect.
PAYMENT (DIGITAL)
Split for digital sales:
Overview: 60/40 NET sales, Poet and Music by David Amram/Calque Cinema.
David 30%
Poet 30%
Calque Cinema 40%.
Since David is on all tracks, he is entitled to the same share as the author of the poem. Calque Cinema’s share is for maintaining sales and accounting.
Payment is based on NET, not retail, after online vendor deducts their costs. I will try to find us the best deal.
PAYMENT SCHEDULE To be determined.
That's the gist of it. If you approve, email me back. If you would like a more formal contract, let me know and I will make one up for us to sign.
Thank you all!

Subject: (for new Dylan book) Music Saved My Life and Bob Dylan Saved My Soul, The Impossible Dream by Ron Whitehead
Music Saved My Life and Bob Dylan Saved My Soul
The Impossible Dream
Just
as I am without one plea
But that thy blood was shed for me
We were a gospel quartet Brad Steve Stan and me
Singing our hearts out "The Impossible Dream"
Sunday morning service at the Centertown Baptist Church
After the preaching and "Just As I Am"
Page came up and smiling said "boys that was sure good"
And she added laughing real loud "and Ronnie you sure are animated"
And then Saundra Karl chimed in with "yes that was fine
but Ronnie you were flat" and oh my oh my oh my
I went home swearing I'd never sing again
And I didn't until I got in the car
Turned on the radio and heard Bob Dylan
Singing Like A Rolling Stone "how does it feel
to be on your own a complete unknown" and
I caught myself breaking my promise
Singing
So what if I was flat as a pancake
Music had saved my life more than once
And every time I'd listened non-stop to
Bob Dylan well ever since I was 12 years old
Every time I heard him sing I felt deep down inside
He was saving my soul helping me want to keep on
Keeping on no matter what the hell was going on
And I knew then as I knew before and after that
I'd never quit listening to Bob Dylan who I regard
To this day as The Best of them all better than Homer
Better than Shakespeare his words his songs helped
Me know I'd never abandon song I'd never quit
Listening to the Gift of God sweet music and even
If I couldn't in public at least in private I'd keep on
Singing and well us boys Brad Steve Stan and me
Well I believe all our lives and souls were saved
More than once by music by Bob Dylan and
Yes we listened to every kind of music we heard
It all church music and funeral dirges as Mama and
Her sister Jo Carolyn sang far back as I remember
I see people climbing on coffins including Pappy
Trying to keep Mammy from leaving him behind
Her lying there in the pine yes we heard gospel
And blues and we heard country mixed with
Traditional oldtime folk mountain Appalachian
Going back to Ireland and Scotland and Wales
And we listened to Jimmie Rodgers and Hank Williams
And Bill Monroe and Patsy Cline and Loretta Lynn
And Woody Guthrie and Odetta and Jean Ritchie
And Pete Seeger and The Everly Brothers and
Merle Travis and Robert Johnson and Mose Rager
And Grandaddy and The Montgomery Brothers and
Brother Mathew's Gospel Quartet with my 3rd grade
Teacher Mrs. Duncan banging on that piano like I'd never
Heard in no Baptist Church and I got excited Oh Lord
Can music make you feel this good? brought tears to
My boy eyes made goosebumps run all up and down
My back and all over my body made my flat topped hair
Stand up straight and tall without no butch wax on it
And then came Elvis and Johnny and Jerry Lee and
My parents said turn it off but they were glued too
And didn't couldn't move eyes staring in disbelief but
Excited what in the world is this and everybody felt
That way more excited than ashamed wanting to be
Part of that energy that we all know must be a gift
From some greater source and for my generation
For me Bob Dylan yes The Beatles and The Rolling
Stones but Bob Dylan from the first note I heard him
Perform late one night I was 12 upstairs in the attic
Where my brother Brad and I slept holes in the walls
Of our old farmhouse wind whispering through cedar
And pine through those holes I saw plenty of ghosts
There but I also every night listened to 79WLS on AM
Radio outta Chicago and the sound went in and out
Depending on the weather and Daddy some nights he
Home from working double shifts at the coal mines
Yelled up the stairs as the radio had gotten real loud
And Bob was singing "how does it feel" and being a
Poet who loves music as much as poetry well Bob's
Words and I knew them all by heart Bob's words
Saved my soul growing up in the pioneer lands of
Kentucky where Bluegrass was birthed distant cousin
Of The Everly Brothers I grew up with music and I
Mean every kind of music but the poemed music that
Has sustained me all these years that has always and
Continues to save my soul to save me from death in
Life is The Master Bob Dylan's music which always
Directed me towards God as if music came from God
And every time I turned to Bob Dylan's music life
Became bearable again I thought about Resurrection
Again I thought about redemption again
And that thou bid'st me come to thee
O Lamb of God, I come! I come!

Back
when Eisenhower was the President,
Golf courses was where most of
his time was spent.
So I never really listened to what the
President said,
Because in general I believed that the General
was politically dead.
But he always seemed to know when the
muscles were about to be flexed,
Because I remember him saying
something, mumbling something about a Military Industrial
Complex.
Americans no longer fight to keep their shores
safe,
Just to keep the jobs going in the arms making
workplace.
Then they pretend to be gripped by some sort of
political reflex,
But all they're doing is paying dues to the
Military Industrial Complex.
The Military and the Monetary,
The
Military and the Monetary,
The Military and the Monetary.
The
Military and the Monetary,
get together whenever they think its
necessary,
They turn our brothers and sisters into mercenaries,
they are turning the planet into a cemetery.
The Military and the
Monetary, use the media as intermediaries,
they are determined to
keep the citizens secondary, they make so many decisions that are
arbitrary.
We're marching behind a commander in chief,
who is
standing under a spotlight shaking like a leaf.
but the ship of
state had landed on an economic reef,
so we knew he was going to
bring us messages of grief.
The Military and the Monetary,
were
shielded by January and went storming into February,
Brought us
pot bellied generals as luminaries,
two weeks ago I hadn't heard
of the son of a bitch,
now all of a sudden he's legendary.
They
took the honour from the honourary,
they took the dignity from
the dignitaries,
they took the secrets from the secretary,
but
they left the bitch an obituary.
The Military and the
Monetary,
from thousands of miles away in a Saudi Arabian
sanctuary,
had us all scrambling for our dictionaries,
cause
we couldn't understand the fuckin vocabulary.
Yeah, there was
some smart bombs,
but there was some dumb ones as well,
scared
the hell out of CNN in that Baghdad hotel.
The Military and the
Monetary,
they get together whenever they think its
necessary,
War in the desert sometimes sure is scary,
but they
beamed out the war to all their subsidiaries.
Tried to make So
Damn Insane a worthy adversary,
keeping the citizens
secondary,
scaring old folks into coronaries.
The Military and
the Monetary,
from thousands of miles in a Saudi Arabian
sanctuary,
kept us all wondering if all of this was really
truely, necessary.
We've got to work for Peace,
Peace ain't
coming this way.
If we only work for Peace,
If everyone
believed in Peace the way they say they do,
we'd have Peace.
The
only thing wrong with Peace,
is that you can't make no money from
it.
The Military and the Monetary,
they get together whenever
they think its necessary,
they've turned our brothers and sisters
into mercenaries,
they are turning the planet, into a
cemetery.
Got to work for Peace,
Peace ain't coming this
way.
We should not allow ourselves to be mislead,
by talk of
entering a time of Peace,
Peace is not the absence of war,
it
is the absence of the rules of war and the threats of war and the
preparation for war.
Peace is not the absence of war,
it is
the time when we will all bring ourselves closer to each
other,
closer to building a structure that is unique within
ourselves
because we have finally come to Peace within
ourselves.
The Military and the Monetary,
The Military and the
Monetary,
The Military and the Monetary.
Get together whenever
they think its necessary,
they've turned our brothers and sisters
into mercenaries,
they are turning parts of the planet, into a
cemetery.
The Military and the Monetary,
The Military and the
Monetary,
We hounded the Ayatollah religiously,
Bombed Libya
and killed Quadafi's son hideously.
We turned our back on our
allies the Panamanians,
and saw Ollie North selling guns to the
Iranians.
Watched Gorbachev slaughtering Lithuanians,
We
better warn the Amish,
they may bomb the Pennsylvanians.
The
Military and the Monetary,
get together whenever they think its
necessary,
they have turned our brothers and sisters into
mercenaries,
they are turning the planet, into a cemetery.
I
don't want to sound like no late night commercial,
but its a
matter of fact that there are thousands of children all over the
world
in Asia and Africa and in South America who need our
help.
When they start talking about 55 cents a day and 70 cents a
day,
I know a lot of folks feel as though that,
thats not
really any kind of contribution to make,
but we had to give up a
dollar and a half just to get in the subway nowadays.
So this is
a song about tommorrow and about how tommorrow can be better. if we
all,
"Each one reach one, Each one try to teach one".
Nobody
can do everything,
but everybody can do something,
everyone
must play a part,
everyone got to go to work, Work for
Peace.
Spirit Say Work, Work for Peace
If you believe the
things you say, go to work.
If you believe in Peace, time to go
to work.
Cant be wavin your head no more, go to work.

The Revolution will be Anonymous, possibly. A brief Black Pig
Liberation Front Communiqué
hello
BPLF collective, friends, collaborators, possible interested
participants, people able to tour or not (all under control),
possible readers, etc...
Does anyone want to contribute blogs to new BPLF site?
Just started, I posted a few things to push the angle of collective performance and resistance - disruption and collective anonymous re-codings.
I am interested in further moving Black Pig Liberation Front along as the performing assault spectacle machine we seem to have developed, while making the extended collective into something more akin to Bataille's Acéphale Society rather than an organized and exposed group with a series of Documents.
Membership should be only vaguely known, with no hierarchy, no necessity of commitment, no official status, no requirements other than participating or not as one chooses. Able to move within the traces of itself as desired, a secret esoteric dispensary of ideas, objects, art.. things of interest beyond the commercial (even as all things have some element of the commercial as unavoidable consequence). Or even a commercial itself.
Take positions, write reviews, politics, post videos, artwork, links (I am going to put a bunch of links to like-minded sites and have been developing relationships with other groups, Tiggun and The Invisible Committee - though a few in a touch of trouble), develop RSS feeds, anything that would advance collective art, action, community, and fun.
Use chance, collage, appropriation, participation, re-prints, original art, shared concepts, work, help promoting each other's work, open usage.
check out: www.blackpigliberationfront.com
I also have like 100 email addresses for some reason?? if anybody who wants one, would be whatever name you choose.
___________@blackpigliberationfront.com and I would link back to your own email so you would get and then respond if you wanted, or link directly back on BPLF site.
Ideas? Comments? Would be appreciated.
also invited bunch of other people who have requested to keep personal addresses and went direct, understandable for volume I guess, rather than record labels/publishers round-about.
also, number of my new e-flex friends interested in throwing some things on.
will update all on responses, while keeping as anonymous as desired, though realizing impossible these days and something to consider.
I don't care. Poetic Terrorism is just that, Poetic. Disruption is not Violence. Resistance is an honorable thing when against thugs (i.e. Goldman Sachs, etc.). Re-codings, development of new modes of expression, in thought and life, in opposition to established submission. Experimentation.
Desire is the Fetish,
