"I have long admired Ron Whitehead. He is crazy as nine loons, and his poetry is a dazzling mix of folk wisdom and pure mathematics."
                                                        Hunter S. Thompson

"Ron Whitehead is one of my closest allies. He is a man of wisdom and tolerance. Ron and I debate over political issues, and sometimes he's even right. But, in the end, we're still friends. There is only one man I want to fight along my side in the trenches of life and his name is Ron Whitehead. He is one of the last warriors left in America."
                                                        Frank Messina

"Ron Whitehead is already acknowledged by many of his Elders to be a Major Literary Figure and the epitome of the work ethic! Ron and I have collaborated, recorded and performed at major festivals and universities all over the USA and Europe. Ron Whitehead is an extraordinary motivator who inspires young people to pursue the highest standards, to work tirelessly and to celebrate the intellect by constant study of Classic Literature while remaining Creative. At 73, I continue to learn from him."
                                                        David Amram

"Ron Whitehead is a one man Atlantic bridge."
                                                        Theo Dorgan

"Ron Whitehead, out there in Kentucky, out there where the tall heroes used to grow, is sowing the dragon's teeth of new heroics."
                                                        Lawrence Ferlinghetti

"Ron Whitehead is one of the most exciting poets in America. Poet and literary activist, he is one of the great poets of his generation."
                                                       Douglas Brinkley

"Spoken word at its purest and most fulfilling. Ron Whitehead's combination of full drawl, magnolia sweet and Wendell Berry's Mad Farmer's blue hot rage, vitally fashions a new post in the American ear."
                                                       Bob Holman

"Ron Whitehead is energetic Bodhisattvic poetic spirit! Happy to see and read so much poetry energy!"
                                                       Allen Ginsberg

Insomniacathon - A Brief History
by Ron Whitehead

On February 4, 1992 I became co-editor, with graduate student Kent Fielding, of what had been a student literary publication at the University of Louisville in Louisville, Kentucky. I asked the academic committee that hired us if I had their permission to turn the publication into one of a small handful of the world's leading literary journals. The committee members looked at each other with disbelief, simultaneously nervously laughed real loud, then said Yes. What had been THE THINKER became THINKER REVIEW. After the meeting Kent told me he wanted to start a literary revolution in Louisville. I told Kent I wanted to start a Global Literary Renaissance home based in Louisville.

For three years we produced hundreds of music and poetry events in Louisville branching out to Kentucky, the USA, the world. Kent and I worked together for three years.

From 1992 to 1995 there was lightning in the air and on the streets of Louisville, lightning that flared out round the world to an ever growing arts community.

In February 1993 we brought to Louisville Eithne Strong from Ireland and E. Ethelbert Miller from Washington D.C. As was often the case we organized events first and then figured out how to cover our expenses. For Eithne and Ethelbert we needed money for airfare, hotels, and honorariums. But where would we find it?! When faced with a crisis we had brainstorming sessions. Two days before Eithne and Ethelbert arrived staff member Michael Crain and I had a session in the THINKER REVIEW office. Feeding thoughts words images back and forth we came up with the idea to produce a 24-hour non-stop music and poetry INSOMNIACATHON. Our guests were arriving in 48 hours. We decided to produce the first ever INSOMNIACATHON the next night at Twice Told Coffee House on Bardstown Road, the heart of the bohemian arts district in Louisville. We produced a flier, ran copies at Kinko's, and sent a team out to plaster the town. Everyone else got on the phones. Word spread like wildfire. Word of mouth remains the best form of advertising. The next night was amazing. Hundreds came. Hundreds were turned away because there wasn't enough room in Twice Told. We passed the hat periodically throughout the 24 hours of non-stop performances. 24 hours later, hours before the arrival of Eithne and Ethelbert, we had the money to cover all their expenses. But something more important had occurred. I witnessed the transformational power of combining poetry and music at the same event. I was uplifted and inspired. Nearly everyone else in attendance was too.

A year earlier, in April 1992, over 400 people attended our first ever open mic poetry reading at which the first THINKER REVIEW was released. Between 1992 and 1995 so many amazing events and publications were produced.

The first big INSOMNIACATHON was held in 1993 at multiple locations in the Bardstown Road Bohemia district. The main venue was The Thunderdome which, at the time, was Louisville's premiere music venue. 72 bands and 112 poets participated. The event ran non-stop for more than three days and three nights. Every night over a thousand people packed The Thunderdome to hear energy charged performances from cutting edge high velocity local regional national bands and poets.

In 1994 we produced four 48-hour non-stop music and poetry INSOMNIACATHONs in New York City, Lowell Massachusetts, Monterey and Louisville Kentucky.

After 1995 Kent and I went separate ways. Kent moved to Alaska. I moved to Iceland.

The history of The Global Literary Renaissance is so rich and dense and painful and joyous that it is nearly impossible to confine a description, albeit brief, to a few words. Producing one INSOMNIACATHON is a near death experience. For over a decade I produced one, two, three, and even four per year, from New Orleans to New York City to The Netherlands.

Kent Fielding and David Baker produced Insomniacathon 2000 at several Louisville, Kentucky locations. Andy Cook produced Insomniacathon 2003 at The Rudyard Kipling in Louisville, Kentucky. James Walck produced the first ever OnLine Insomniacathon 2004. I was Advisor for all three of those Insomniacathons. Will there be another Insomniacathon? I hope so. I hope young people (of all ages) round the planet produce many Insomniacathons.

The Insomniacathon is a temporary autonomous zone where people from all walks of life come together to create, produce, perform, share their creative work, share their lives. All the creative arts are included: poetry, prose, music, painting, photography, sculpture, dance, theatre, film. Performers and attendees come away inspired to live, to create.

Since 1992 I've produced over 1,000 music and poetry events, including 24-48-72 hour non-stop Music & Poetry INSOMNIACATHONs, across the USA and Europe.

The University of Louisville Rare Books and Archives, directed by Delinda Buie, is the permanent repository, past present future, for all my work including my work to create and perpetuate the sacred profane fire known as . . .
The Global Literary Renaissance.

yet again, i failed miserably by ron whitehead

yet again, i failed miserably
to love you
i obviously don't love you
cause if i did you
would feel free
you wouldn't cry for
space for time
to find yourself
you wouldn't wail for
freedom
you wouldn't scream that
you're a slave to my will
yet again, i failed miserably
to love you
but now i finally see
i see my failure clearly
and i set you free
so go my love
who i do not love
cause if i did i would have
already realized recognized
my failure oh woe is me
for being an idiot for
not being capable of love
for not being buddha jesus
mother teresa the dalai lama
but at least now i see i recognize
my failure and i say go go my love go
run run as fast as you can and get
away from me from me from
my failed attempt at love
yes yes yes yet again, i failed miserably
so escape my love escape quickly
in the night get out of town take
the backroads and go wherever you
have to go go go into the arms of
another failed lover go go go into
your own arms
but leave please leave
cause i can't stand the pain the
suffering of failing to love you
as i should have
yet again, i failed miserably
escape my love get out now
as i add, in closing, that
our failed love was
the most beautiful failure
of my life so
thank you my love
who i do not love cause i'm
not capable of loving
thank you my love
for the happiest
four years of
my life

At some point in the fifty-years-and-now-more-important-than-ever course of Jack Kerouac's On the Road, you came upon it, return to it, finally encountered it, and were blown away.  We're thinking knowing feeling it made quite imprint on you...as a writer-artist-human being.  What does the importance of that imprint mean to you, to our culture, to the tangled time we are living in...we're thinking feeling knowing you could contribute something of high merit as we pay homage to the everlasting work of literature that is On the Road, as Kerouac's book celebrates its fiftieth anniversary.  We'd love to hear from you, within one week, up to nine pages plus a photo of you or something you see as signifying that imprint, and a brief bio that reflects that imprint, as we pay homage and ask you to come along for the ride...share with us your take, your style, your imprint.

T
he Marquee Club, www.themarqueeclub.net,  has often been defined as "the most important venue in the history of European pop music." Not only for having been witness to the development of the music culture in London during four decades, but also for having been an essential meeting point and a real cradle for some of the most important artists and music scenes. If it was not for the Marquee Club maybe many of the legendary rock and pop artists that we know today would have never made it during their hard starting careers and their names would have never shown up in the music business. The club was first opened on April 19th 1958 in London's 165 Oxford Street. During the following years the Marquee became the most important place for the jazz and rhythm & blues scenes in London.
Legends like Sonny Boy Williamson, Alexis Korner's Blues Incorporated, and harmonica player Cyril Davies played regularly.
During the 60's a new generation of British rhythm and blues bands, such as the Rolling Stones, John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers, the Yardbirds, and The Animals forged the coming of a new era in pop music at the Marquee. On March 13th 1964 the venue was relocated to it's most famous location in London's Soho at 90 Wardour Street which became a legend in the history of pop and rock music. The Marquee became the most important venue for the emerging British scene and witnessed the birth and rise of some of the most important artists in the 60's and 70's such as Jimi Hendrix, David Bowie, Cream, Pink Floyd, Manfred Mann, the Who, The Nice, Yes, Led Zeppelin, Jethro Tull, King Crimson, Genesis, Moody Blues, and many others. The club was also witness to the birth of all the different music genres born during the last decades of the 20th century, including acid rock, progressive rock, hard rock, and folk rock. During the late 70's and early 80's the Marquee saw the development of the British punk, new wave, synth pop, heavy rock, and neo progressive music scenes, with bands such as the Clash, Ultravox, the Pretenders, the Police, the Cure, Joy Division, the Damned, Generation X, Siouxsie and the Banshees, and the Sex Pistols.

Raven Hair and Turquoise

for Sarah, farewell to our marriage poem
we will always remain dear friends

by Ron Whitehead

Through God's or a raven's eyes,
from high above,
the turquoised car is seen
winding southward through
the hunting grounds of Kentucky:

Your soft lips kiss the colored stars,
the red giants, the blue dwarfs,
on my chest. Your tongue draws
a slow line round
the blue, green and yellow lotus flowered
sun at the center of my pyramid.
And as I breathe your raven hair
your tears wash my red and orange lightning
bolts, wash them clean of color and sweat.

My love
these bodies, our home
in this windless place,
prevail for pulsing moments but
pulsing moments like your kiss,
your tongue, your tears,
last forever, and, through God's or a raven's eyes,
from high above,
an invisible force sings like a secret wind:

Our turquoise windhewn
Love shall forever be our palace.

divorce survival get back on my feet Wish List
of a non-conformist non-materialist: Ron Whitehead

yes beyond sad but true that Sarah is leaving. we're getting divorce. irreconcilable differences. we both have wounded hearts but we're both healthy happy strong so wounded hearts will heal quickly. divorce will be friendly fair. Sarah and I have agreed to continue to work together some. Sarah is an amazing woman person. best i've ever been with. i will love her and support her work always. i will always only have good things to say about her.

when Sarah and I got together she already had a little furniture, tv, stereo, computer, shelves, tables, chairs, and a few more items. i had a few clothes.
we bought a bed together. cause of Sarah's scoliosis she's taking the bed. she's looking for an apartment now. i'm staying in our apartment. when she's gone the sum total of my material possessions will be a few used clothes and an inexpensive around town nogear bicycle. i will have a totally empty apartment. no phone. ha. regardless, i'm gonna carry on The Work. no matter what has happened in my life I have relentlessly carried on The Work.

The Work. as many of you know, for 20 years my breath my heartbeat have been One with the Universal Creative Forces. unfortunately i've burnt out everyone who has worked or lived with me. my unswerving goal has been to create as much as possible while i have the opportunity. who/what instilled this urge this driving force in me? i don't know. but i do know that my entire being has been and is filled with the creative fire. and the flames haven't ebbed. Sarah and I have 4 new titles coming out this fall: Sarah's new DON'T DIE YET cd, the Frank Messina & Ron Whitehead WALKING HOME CD, my THE WANDERER book, plus Sarah and I are still gonna bring out the long hoped for Christmas album titled Y'ALL GET THE CHRISTMAS TREE AND COME ON. plus i've been invited to read at NYC Howl Fest in september and at the London (England) International Poetry & Song Festival at the end of October. plus i'm helping Richard Deakin line up artists for that event which will be held at the famous MARQUEE. interesting that while Sarah was recording her new cd in Kevin Ratterman's Funeral Home studio i went into bathroom to take a leak and right above toilet was poster of THE WHO performing at THE MARQUEE. all the greats performed. there. and some of the greats will perform there at LIPS 2.
plus i'll be recording my new cd I REFUSE in late february. so. i need help from anyone who is able to help. all i care about is spreading love via my creative work and my performances and teachings and most importantly my friendships. if anyone funds one of my titles they will be listed in the front of the book or cd as Special Thanks to (fill in the blank. or you can remain anonymous if you prefer) for making this project possible.

here's my Wish List:

1) inexpensive or used television.
2) inexpensive or used cd player.
3) inexpensive or used computer (with Word plus so i can email) plus printer and paper.
4) used table for the computer.
5) used comfortable reading chair.
6) red wine. only drinking one glass for lunch. then don't drink til 6pm.
7) will barter my company and conversation for meals.
8) will read my poetry for food and red wine.
9) good felt tip writing pens.
10) money for survival. i'm teaching 3 classes this fall which will not quite cover my rent but that money won't start til last day of september. fortunately we've paid all our august bills. but that leaves me zero for food survival for august plus all bills and survival for september.
11) good hybrid off road on road bicycle so i have long distance travel. this way i can go visit Mama and Daddy and my brother and sisters who live in Ohio County, western Kentucky, 150 miles away. fortunately my oldest son Nathanial and his wife Jessica live here in Louisville. my daughter Rani and her kids my grandkids Roz and Max plus my youngest son Dylan live in Winston-Salem North Carolina. if i have cross country bicycle i'll be able to ride down and visit them. my present bicycle is dirt cheap but nice in town slowmo nogear bike only. i ride it downtown to teach.
12) cheapest airfare to nyc september 6th to 9th so i can read at Howl Fest.
13) $1,500 for my new 275-page THE WANDERER book. this will cover graphics plus printing of 200 copies plus shipping review copies. this is an important book. it includes 60 photos. i'll include Table of Contents at end of Wish List. book will be released October 2nd. whoever covers this expense will receive a special dedication in front of book. plus 10 copies.
14) $1,500 for my new I REFUSE cd. this will cover graphics plus printing of 1,000 copies plus shipping review copies. whoever covers this expense will receive a special dedication on the cd jacket. plus 25 copies. i'll include track list at end of Wish List. musicians on this cd will include Tyrone Cotton, Andy Cook, Sarah Elizabeth, and electric guitarist Will Ragland. cd will be released in April.
15) $750 for my half of expenses for 1,000 copies of new Sarah/Ron Y'ALL GET THE CHRISTMAS TREE and COME ON cd. this gonna be amazing and will around for a long time. cd will be released October 2nd. whoever covers this expense will receive 25 copies of cd plus Special Dedication Thank You in cd jacket.

THANK YOU ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!! if you want to contribute to my Wish List please send or drop off gifts to me at:

On July 14 it's Jesse James for Logan Countians

By Mark Griffin
Thursday, July 5, 2007 9:00 AM CDT

The Logan Arts Council announces that the Jesse James Art and Film Festival will be held July 14 at Carrico Park in downtown Russellville and at the Logan County Public Library, 201 West Sixth Street. Activities include music, poetry, theater, and artistic workshops. Famous Outlaw Jesse James will be in attendance; Sheriff Tom Rhea will be ensuring he robs no one.

Nobel Nominee Ron Whitehead of Ohio County will be the headliner.

"Whitehead's poetry is a powerful summation of the American spirit," Dr. John Rocco,

Associate Professor of Humanities at State University of New York Maritime, wrote to the Nobel Prize Committee. "I would like to take this time to bring this extraordinary poet to your attention for consideration for the Nobel Prize in literature. ... There is a vital spirituality in his work that questions the nature of artistic creativity at the same time it embodies it. His work is profoundly engaged in critiquing the control modern American culture has over the individual and the planet."

The late Beat Poet Allen Ginsberg described him with an "energetic … poetic spirit!"

Whitehead's wife, Sarah, a folk musician, will be performing along with her husband. She has been compared to Bluegrass Legend Alison Krauss and has earned praise from Kentucky's current state leader. "Sarah Elizabeth Whitehead's talents are evident in the special selection of poems, stories and songs of Kentucky. The Commonwealth is proud of its citizens who promote our resources and keep alive our fine traditions," Governor Ernie Fletcher said.

"Just back from performances in Portugal, Sarah and I are making a pit stop on our way to shows in California," Ron Whitehead expressed in an e-mail. "Our gypsy souls love traveling. My outlaw soul is excited 'bout our performance at The Jesse James Festival. Sarah and I will bring pure raw Outlaw Spirit to our performance. We look forward to meetin' everybody." Readers may learn more about this couple at their website www.tappingmyownphone.com.

One of the featured filmmakers will be Chris R. Notarile of New Jersey who is excited about having his fan films shown in Russellville that day. "I'm very familiar with your town and it would be an honor," he said. Notarile is fan of Horror Movie Auteur John Carpenter, and is familiar with his connection to Russellville. Another filmmaker -- Jeff Cantrell of Morehead, KY n will show off his best film shorts and be on hand to answer any questions about making movies.

The finale of the film festival will be two films, one based on a literary classic and the other on an urban myth. Call of Cthulhu, based on the 1926 fantasy by H. P. Lovecraft, has long been described as unfilmable but Screenwriter Sean Branney and Director Andrew Leman accomplished the impossible by using the old-fashioned silent movie making techniques that were available during Lovecraft's lifetime. This scary movie has no gore but a few disturbing scenes, reminiscent of Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds or M. Night Shyamalan's The Village. Dean Sears' Hopewell Haunting is based on true events that happened in Eastern Kentucky. A country preacher is asked to settle the restless spirit haunting a house in Hopewell, KY. Sears will be on hand to discuss this film afterwards.

The Logan Arts Council is working in conjunction with Logan County Public Library, and Russellville Parks and Recreation to bring a month long series of art-based events for the public. On July 1, the library will honor the late Glenn Robertson, who painted scenes of Logan County, with a month long exhibit of his prints. The final Harry Potter book will be coming out that month and the library as well as the festival will celebrate with themed activities, including an ugly sock contest for a chance to win a copy of the book.

Russellville Parks and Rec will hold its July Jive on July 6 on the Square. Big Nancy and a yet-to-be-named opening act will provide the music. The public is invited to bring their lawn chairs.

Other performers at the Jesse James Art and Film Festival include the Slow Poisoner, a one-man Surreal Bluegrass band from San Francisco; local experimental musicians Subterranean Bubblegum Museum; author Algie Ray Smith; newspaper columnist Evelyn Richardson; Gospel Musician Russ Funk; Russellville Rockers Totem Soul, Bowling Green's legendary Banjo Bill, Blackbeard Von Muttonchops of Louisville, Celtic duo Shadowdancer, Poet Dory Hudspeth and Celtic band Red River Breeze among others. Singers are encouraged to participate in the Logan Arts Council's version of American Idol (with grouchy librarian Mark Griffin serving in the role of Simon). Everyone is encouraged to dress up in old timey costumes and bring a camera.

LIVE at THE RUD
(photo of Jim, Sarah, Carl, Andy, Ron in huddle at The Rud)

The Best concert I've ever had anything to do with. You've got to understand.
Since childhood I've attended, performed at, produced, and participated in
tens of thousands of concerts round the world. Last night, June 3rd 2007,
The Rudyard Kipling Benefit Concert was The Best.

The Best Concert of All Time.

There are many reasons why it was The Best Concert of all time. I'll name
a few. Jim James (My Morning Jacket) and Sarah Elizabeth Whitehead are
my two favorite singers. They are two of The Best singers songwriters
musicians. But there is more. They have a rare necessary element: deep
passionate compassionate hearts. They have an innate inherent wisdom
that is both ancient and childlike. All those elements birth a charisma that
is electrifying. The energy at The Rud was electric. 4-hour concert. The
audience in rapt attention. There is more. The union of male (Jim) and female
(Sarah) energy produced a duet unlike any other duet, past or present. Plus.
No singers have the courage or ability to go where Jim and Sarah went at
the Live at The Rud concert. They covered the spectrum of musical genres:
from acappella mountain to oldtime to country to blues to jazz to folk to soul
to rock to R&B, from broken hearted spirituals to steamy romance, and more.
In one concert Jim and Sarah proved that they are master singers in any genre.
The audience was mesmerized. Not one person, including the performers, will
ever be the same. That includes Carl Broemel (amazing), Andy Cook (brilliant),
and me. The night was more than special, it was pure alchemy. We were
transformed transported to new realms. Spirit and sex became one energy.
The Holy Spirit The Great Spirit moved in us and through us. The Rud was
filled with angels with spirits. We heard angels sing, perform. We will never
be the same. My heart is open. Tears of joy. Amazing Grace. Thanks.

hello Family & Friends! terrible news is that yesterday someone attacked and destroyed our www.tappingmyownphone.com website. our (now former) webhost, Seanic, said that the website and their backup are mutilated so badly that they are not retrievable. we/they have no idea what hacker did this: individual? group? government? who knows. we sure don't. we are both devastated. Sarah is distraught beyond words. she has worked on our site for three years. for the past year she's been working round the clock overhauling, updating, rejuvenating the site. i've had the site for 10 years and have put in uncountable hours on it. this is the same as someone burning down your business. not only was our website a living history of our lives our work but it was also the means to our livelihood. as most of you know Sarah and I are poets writers singers musicians teachers. in today's global community a website, via the internet, is the channel through which contacts are made with folks round the world. so much has been destroyed. we have no backup, no insurance. we lost our photos, videos, reviews, our online store etc. we can't get them back. we didn't think we needed to have our own website backup cause we had been guaranteed, by the webhost, that they had a backup plus their security would never allow such a thing to happen. now. what to do? we are discussing whether to wander into the wilderness and disappear or find a new webhost and webmaster (both from Kentucky) and rebuild and maintain a simple website that will present brief biographies and offer our books, cds, and other works. we'll discuss this over the next few days then decide. we're happy to say that friday night we're going to hear/see Ralph Stanley & The Clinch Mountain Boys at the old Bill Monroe homeplace, outside Rosine, Kentucky in Ohio County (where i grew up). then Saturday Sarah performs (i'll read couple pieces) at a festival in Carlisle County, far western Kentucky. I appreciate your love, friendship, and support all of which has nurtured and sustained me/us for years and years. love and blessings from Kentucky Ron p.s. ironically we'd just added our new Never Give Up (poem i wrote with The Dalai Lama) t-shirt to the front page of the website. p.p.s. regardless of who did this, or why they did it: I Will Not Bow Down & i will Never Give Up!!!!!!! www.tappingmyownphone.com www.insomniacathon.org www.tyronecotton.com NEVER GIVE UP (poem) by His Holiness The Dalai Lama & Ron Whitehead
