i find myself...waiting

by Ron Whitehead

i find myself...waiting
for you
for you who
are gone
long gone
three months divorced
we now live
in adjacent apartment buildings
across from cherokee park
the wind blows hard
it is autumn
leaves fly
scattered to and fro and fro
the leaves too
are gone
you will move soon
returning to your homeland
to far western kentucky
ballard county
you yearn for the confluence
of the ohio and mississippi rivers
to drink those mingling waters
to bathe there
naked
brown woman
who i still love
as much as ever
more than ever
i yearn for you
in the night
i wait for you
through empty days
but i will never
tell you any of this
for you
are gone gone gone
and though i strive
to let go to let go
i find myself...waiting
i find myself...waiting
i find myself...waiting
